WHAT IS ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a science devoted to the understanding and improvement of human behavior. This scientifically validated approach increases understanding of how learning takes place and how behavior is affected by the environment. ABA is an evidence-based, best practice approach that is widely recognized as a safe and effective treatment for Autism Spectrum Disorder, by a number of federal agencies including the U.S. Surgeon General and American Psychological Association. Although ABA is strongly recommended for the treatment of autism, its principles and methods have also proven effective to help many learners (with or without disabilities) acquire a wide range of skills.

ABA includes many different techniques and focuses on antecedents (what happens before a behavior occurs) and on consequences (what happens after the behavior). ABA based therapies are structured to include data collection for target behaviors, and provide positive strategies for the increase of communication skills and the decrease of problematic behaviors. These techniques and principles include reinforcement, shaping, fading, Discrete Trial Training (DT), Incidental Teaching or Natural Environment Training (NET), Verbal Behavior (VB), and Pivotal Response Training (PRT).
